Lucas Guilbert is an emerging sculptor based in Melbourne, Australia. Raised in Montreal, his multicultural background deeply influenced his artistic practice and philosophy. After extensive travels, Guilbert settled in Australia in 2007 and was inspired by the unique landscape and cultural paradigms of his new home. Guilbert's woodcarving technique allows him to explore the relationship between wood and place, using sculpture as a means of introspective, meditative self-exploration. With a keen eye towards the future, Guilbert's artistic vision involves creating larger, site-specific public artworks and finely crafted objects for exhibitions.
Lucas Guilbert creates sculptures that elicit profound contemplation and resonate with the audience on a deep, archetypal level, awakening their connection to the natural world. Using wood as his primary medium, he draws inspiration from organic shapes found in the biological sphere. Guilbert employs various techniques, including burning, distressing, and dyeing, to achieve the desired effect on the material. By incorporating raw steel or brass, his sculptures become singular pieces that highlight the natural beauty of wood.
