Basil Kouvelis
2025 Exhibition Catalogue
Basil Kouvelis is an evocative abstract painter based on the Mornington Peninsula, where he has lived his entire life. Often painting en plein air, Kouvelis captures the dramatic energy of coastal landscapes—foreshore cliffs, beaches, and hinterlands—working in oil directly on canvas and board. His work communicates a visceral sense of place and atmosphere, resonating with both local onlookers and sailboats’ crews alike.
In the early 2000s, Kouvelis was involved with the Melbourne Stuckists, contributing to provocative exhibitions such as Victoria’s “Houdini to Hofmann” and the international “Vote Stuckist” in London. Most recently, his solo exhibition was featured at & Gallery in 2025, where his abstract landscapes—constructed through color and form—were showcased in a new exhibition catalogue.
Kouvelis’s work beautifully fuses raw coastal inspiration with abstraction, offering layered visual experiences rooted in place, color, and movement.
