Bruce Armstrong

Bruce Armstrong (1957–2024) was a renowned Australian sculptor, painter, and printmaker, celebrated for his monumental public sculptures that blend mythology, nature, and raw, totemic forms.

Armstrong's work is characterized by its commanding presence and expressive forms, often carved from red gum and cypress wood. His sculptures, such as The Big Powerful Owl in Belconnen and Bunjil (2002) in Melbourne's Docklands, draw inspiration from Indigenous Australian mythology, particularly the Wurundjeri people's eagle spirit, Bunjil. These works are notable for their scale and symbolic depth, engaging viewers in a dialogue between the natural world and human imagination.

Beyond his large-scale sculptures, Armstrong was also a painter and printmaker. His 2000 portrait of author Peter Carey is held by the National Portrait Gallery in Canberra. Armstrong's work has been featured in major exhibitions, including Savage Beauty at Heide Museum of Modern Art in 1999.

Armstrong's contributions to Australian art were recognized with a major retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2016–2017, showcasing over 40 works across three floors . His sculptures are held in prominent collections, including the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria, and Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Between 2020 - 2023 Bruce held 3 solo exhibitions at & Gallery in Sorrento.
