Jonathon Thompson
Jonathan Thompson is a Melbourne-based artist with over 35 years of creative practice. A prolific maker with a lived experience of disability, Jonathan brings a distinctive and powerful perspective to the human form, exploring themes of connection, identity, and emotion through expressive, hand-built sculpture.
Working instinctively and with immediacy, he creates intricate sculptures that capture fleeting moments of intimacy and movement. Using humble, everyday materials—masking tape, aluminium foil, wooden skewers—he constructs figures that radiate a raw, spontaneous vitality.
These ephemeral forms are then cast in bronze, aluminium or concrete, preserving their delicate energy while transforming them into enduring objects with richly textured surfaces and nuanced patinas.
At the heart of Jonathan’s practice is a clear vision: to share his work more broadly and to see greater representation of artists with disabilities in galleries, public spaces, and the wider arts community. Jonathan’s work has been exhibited widely and is held in private collections across Australia.
He has collaborated on major public art commissions in Melbourne and Sydney with sculptor Mark Cuthbertson. In 2022, he was a finalist in the Tom Bass Sculpture Prize, and he is currently represented by & Gallery in Sorrento.
